Oak is a hardwearing and robust material which we source from sawmills in the UK. It produces a long-lasting material suitable for use as a base for routed timber or sandblasted wood oak signs – applications ranging from oak bollards to routed signs in a plank structure. Oak is also extensively used for framing full colour printed signs produced in Glass Reinforced Plastic, GRP, G.R.P. and Dibond. Oak even in contact with the ground is extremely hardwearing for signs and signposts. Unlike softwood as a base for sign or display materials, Oak does not need to be pressure treated – an expensive process that does nothing for the environment.
Care does however need to be taken in the sourcing and selection of Oak for wooden signs. Green oak for signs and displays means it has not been air or kiln-dried. Green oak can be unpredictable and can both split and crack as it dries out and matures. A further problem with oak signs can be warping and distortion of long oak posts. A reputable oak sign manufacturer with a careful selection of oak materials will be able to minimise these problems. An oak sign or signpost will provide many years of long life and will look increasingly attractive as it weathers down and develops the silver sheen associated with oak products outdoors.
Oak can be used with routed graphics on plank style signs – a good example being entrance signs to nature reserves and country parks. Fingerposts or fingerposts in oak, timber and wood are another ideal application for oak signs – the directional finger arms are routed and the text infilled in an agreed colour. The finger arms are morticed into the posts. Traditional lectern frames and post mounted vertical frames to mount full-colour interpretive graphics are another excellent use of oak signs and frames.
We ensure that all oak used at Shelley Signs is sourced from sustainable supplies and whenever possible from FSC suppliers. We use Shropshire based sawmills for all our timber and Oak.
In summary, Oak provides great material for signs and displays. It is a timber we work with frequently and feel very comfortable in both recommending and supplying to our clients for outdoor signs and displays. All joinery work is undertaken in-house at Eaton on Tern – we do not subcontract.
