Product Overview

Wildlife reserves, parks, open spaces and SSSI sites all use natural history, wildlife, nature interpretation panels and signs. Interpretation panels are used at these sites to as a way to relate information to visitors and educate them on the history and facts of the places and points of interest.

Places of interest that use natural history interpretation often have signs located at the entrance which will usually include a map of the surrounding area and then throughout the trails interpretation signs will be situated at specific points along the trail, these signs or panels normally contain information about any trees, plants birds or insects that can be found nearby, there will usually be at least one photograph or water colour illustration on each panel.

Technical Specification
Many natural history sites do not have a large amount of security and due to the vast expanse of outdoor area that a lot of these sites have the locations where the interpretative panels can be found are in unmanned areas. Even natural history sites can be subjected to vandalism and graffiti, therefore all natural history interpretive signs need to be robust and vandal proof, with an easy to clean top surface to wipe off graffiti and every day dirt and grime. They also need to be able to withstand constant changes in the weather and harsh elements.

Shelley Signs have been a successful and reputable sign company for a number of years, within this time our experiences have enabled us to conclude that Glass Reinforced Plastic sign (GRP, G.R.P), although we use an array of materials including Acrylic, Dibond, High Impact Acrylic and Polycarbonate, we do advise our clients whose requirements are for a durable and colour fast outdoor sign to choose a GRP interpretative sign.

When choosing from our vast selection of frames and lecterns it is vital for our clients who are commissioning natural history interpretation signs to ensure that they choose the correct colour and material, when making this decision the signs surroundings needs to be taken into consideration so that the finished sign will not look out of place and will be befitting to its environment. It is also important to ensure that you have requested the correct angle when choosing a lectern frame, through our experience we find that an angel of 45 degrees will mean that the sign can be easily read by adults, children and visitors in wheelchairs, although we do find that some clients request a 30 degree angle, whatever the angle we will be happy to meet our clients request.

Case Study
We recently completed a project for Corston Quarry and Pond, near Malmesbury, in Wiltshire. The project required us to design and manufacture a natural history interpretation panel, our design team made a wonderful job on the design, the design was beautiful and included numerous photographs of wildlife, that were sourced by ourselves. The overall finish of the sign was a large bold design that did not have too much text, and was supported on a steel lectern frame that was sprayed black.
