Gauge boards

Gauge Boards are simply large rulers that measure the rise and fall of water levels for environmental studies.

Gauge boards can be known under several different names, these are gage boards, staff boards, tidal boards and river measuring boards. Gauge boards measure not only inland water – rivers, lakes, etc but they are also used for the measurement of tidal movements.

There are many different types of gauge boards, depending on what gauge board you require is depicted by what type of purpose you are using it for. For instance, for inland water measurements the most commonly used are the D50, D50R, D64 and the D64R, for tidal measurements these would usually be tidal gauge boards D53 and D52. Our highly skilled and experienced team can advise you on which particular model you require if you are unsure.

At Shelley Signs all our gauge boards are made from Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), these are manufactured to one metre in length as standard, we will of course provide our clients with longer gauge boards upon request if they have a requirement for them.

Our production team are not only highly trained and skilled in all aspects of the manufacturing of gauge boards but use the latest printing equipment. Shelley Signs uses the Mimaki JF1631 flat bed printer, after which the graphics are encapsulated into resin. The Glass Reinforced Plastic that we use is the most suited material to handle the harsh environment each gauge board is placed in, able to withstand extreme heat and weather conditions without expanding or contracting, this also allows the gauge boards to be cleaned easily, this helps with lengthening the gauge boards lifetime as the growth of algae does appear over time from the constant use in water.

Shelley Signs ensure that all our gauge boards, are all manufactured and produced to British Standard 3680 : Part 7 : 1971, Part 7, Methods of Measurement of Liquid Flow in Open Channels. This means that both the D50 and D64 style boards are 4mm thick, and drilled and supplied with stainless steel screws.

As standard the D50 gauge board is 145mm wide and the D64 gage board is 100mm wide. Graduations are marked clearly every 10mm. Ramp or incline boards are manufactured to measure depths on an angle. On both the 30 and 45 degree angles we have standard designs although our design team can produce specialised artwork for all other angles and depths.

Depending on the clients specifications our gauge boards can be produced to show imperial measurements although as standard our gauge boards are usually produced to show metric readings as set out to reach BS 3680 standards. There are several optional extras that our clients can choose from one of which is to have the numerals in red datum, these are used to show full metre levels from the red datum point.
